Who We Are

Our story

Having always dreamed of owning her own business, following in her parents and grandparents shoes; Erin spent years working across various fields in customer service, witnessing issues she knew could be improved. In 2003, Black Star Communications, a 24-hour answering service founded by Erin Rudd around her grandparents' kitchen table.

The name Black Star holds special significance. Erin’s grandfather had always called her his “Star,” and she wanted a name that honored both her family and her values. Combining her favorite color and her grandfather’s nickname, Black Star was born—both meaningful and strategically positioned to stand out in any alphabetical list.

Erin sold the answering service in 2005, but her entrepreneurial spirit remained strong. 2 short years later in 2007, in keeping with her original dream Black Star Enterprises was born as a causal bookkeeping business serving just 2 clients.

Driven to make a difference with the mission to provide clients with timely, professional, and affordable services they could rely on Black Star Enterprises grew in both reputation and scope. Over time, a need for a clear identity of services was needed, and the name evolved into Black Star Accounting in 2012 as a full service firm with the support of her husband Bryan.

Today, Black Star Accounting is thriving, with a dedicated team and a growing client base, continuing to provide exceptional accounting services rooted in a commitment to professionalism and personalized care.

Erin and Ancaster

Erin started Black Star Accounting in March of 2012 after working for her mother Reta at S & E Accounting and Jackos Enterprises part time since 1990. Black Star Accounting became full time in 2015 for Erin when she purchased a bookkeeping office in Stoughton, SK. Needing to remain in Regina, due to her husbands job, and kids comittments, the physical office in Stoughton was closed in 2018 – but retained a great deal of those clients still today.
Erin has a background in Accounting, bookkeeping, Office Administration and Auditing. Although not listening to her mom and continuing on to be designated – Which Reta reminders her OFTEN that she was wrong.. Bookkeeping has become a rewarding career for Erin.

  • Erin and Ancaster have been working together as a team since since graduating from the Service Dog program from Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides in June 2017.

Erin has Cerbral Palsy and as a result has mobility and balance issues, and Ancaster is from the same school and program as Elsie from the Service Dog Program – which provides her with physical support to allow her to keep her independence and remain safe at home and in public.

Ancaster LOVES to work, and although it has been a struggle learning a new routine now that the office is at home… Ancaster says “Thanks COVID!” He knows he has important work to do.. and it IS closer to all the TREATS, which is evident to his weight gain, which he is now on a diet for.

We LOVE coming to work every day and getting to spend time with both our human and canine colleagues (and friends)!

Cathleen and Bella

Cathleen has been working for Black Star since April of 2017 – almost 8 years ago, wow!! Cathleen came to us with no bookkeeping experience and now works as Erin’s assistant, assisting with client communication, taxes, data entry and she can take a set of books from start to finish!!
Cathleen and Bella have been working together as a team since March 2022 after Cathleen’s former service dog, Lyra, retired from service work. Just like Lyra did, Bella provides medical alert and medical response for Cathleen. Lyra helped Cathleen discover a freedom she didn’t know was missing before they became a team, and now Bella, with her silly personality and love of everyone, is helping Cathleen to learn to truly live her best life! Both Bella and Lyra are owner trained service dog

Jaydean & Elsie

Jaydean has been working for Black Star since May of 2021, working in the office 1 day a week. In 2023, Jaydean moved to working remotely; due to health concerns.

Jaydean started in the BSA office after meeting Erin and Ancaster through the Service Dog School they attended. She came to us with no bookkeeping experience, but a background in Office Administration Assisting with client communication, data entry and filing. She is often the voice you will hear on the phone if you call the office.

Jaydean and Elsie have been working together as a team since graduating from the Service Dog program from Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides in 2016

  • Elsie is a program trained dog, from the Service Dog Program – which provides Jaydean with physical support to allow her to keep her independence and remain safe at home and in public.

Elsie not only thinks she is in charge of Jaydean, but is often the boss of the office. She is now assisting Ancaster with his due to COVID weight loss program with a weekly play date in the yard.

We LOVE coming to work every day and getting to spend time with both our human and canine colleagues (and friends)!

Reta

Also known around the office as: The knower of ALL things.. or MOM!!

Although she doesn’t have a service dog.. YET (she wants to steal Ancaster) she does have a service human.. Also known as Jack or Dad!!!

Originally from Digby NS, Reta was a nurse before having Erin. Erin was a very small, very sick little baby – so to be able to stay home with her Reta went to night school in 1974 and became a CMA – Certified Management Accountant, you could do that back then.. now it is a 4 to 6 year Bacholor Degree.

  • After meeting Jack in 1978 the 2 became inseparable… after years of bugging from family and friends they finally got married in 1984. Reta was the accountant for many businesses through out the years in Prince Albert and LaRonge, and owned her own full time practice for quite sometime also named S & E Accounting. After closing that she went back to working for others, while still doing her own part time under Jackos Enterprises.

Reta has finally retired… KIND OF…. after decades in the field.. and informed Erin 2 years ago that she was working for Erin now.. As she doesn’t care for all the technology. All the while reminding Erin that she was right and Erin was wrong about finishing school.

Her knowledge and experience is 2nd to none, and we value everything she brings to our table.. and we even love Dad – CEO of Jackos Enterprises. We haven’t quite convinced them to move here yet.. but we are working on it.. open to suggestions.. Dad might take bribes… he likes chocolate..

Ali & Pixar

Ali has been part of the BSA team since April of 2025. Ali has a background in veterinary medicine and administration. She has taken to the role of reception with ease and become a valuable part of our team.

Ali and Pixar have been working together since April 2022, when Pixar came home as a small pup – ready to grow & learn how to help Ali! Pixar is an owner trained service dog who provides medical alert and medical response for Ali.

Annette

Annette joined the BSA team late in December 2024, taking on the role of BSA administrator and client collections, with plans to move into start to finish bookkeeping.

Annette comes to BSA with 20+ years of experience in business administration; with experience in corrections and non profit sectors. She also has many years experience working with collection agencies, giving her a unique skill set that we currently didn’t have. While she comes to us with no start to finish bookkeeping experience, she does have experience with parts of the process. She has always enjoyed working with numbers and solving mathematical puzzles as there is a clear logic to them which is a good trait to have in a bookkeeper. Annette is eager to learn and succeed at the tasks given to her.

  • Erin and Annette have been friends for 30+ years, having grown up in the same town. She had watched Erin work with her mother through the years, even laughed at how much like her mother Erin is turning out to be. In the past few years, Erin has hinted that she would be good at bookkeeping, although not taking it serious until December of 2024. In and effort to create a separation in work and friendship, we have made Cathleen her direct supervisor as both Erin and Annette can be pretty stubborn.

Although Annette doesn’t have a service dog, she does fit in to the BSA dynamic well. Annette is a proud single mother of a teenage son; having joint custody of him paired with a medical disability she found full time employment difficult in recent years. The flexibility that BSA offers their staff has so far proven to be the missing link for her and success. She has said that having a company who has faith and understanding in their employees is not only rare, but immeasurable for her and she hopes to make her place with BSA her forever career.

Incase you haven’t noticed we LOVE dogs !!!

Illustration

Brandi

We could not leave out the office supervisor!
Brandi – Office Supervisor; was a poodle bichon and true to her breed.. SHE was the BOSS of EVERYONE!! Although she spent most of her day laying on a nice comfy bed under Erin’s desk, she did come out periodically to make sure no one was misbehaving.

Illustration

Eddie

We could not leave out the office staff stress level checker!!
Eddie – Staff stress level checker; was a Shit-tzu, who’s main goals in life was to eat (we swear he thinks he is a Lab) and to cuddle EVERYONE. Although Mr. Eddie was going blind, it didn't stop him from getting the staff to take an “Eddie Break” every once in a while, because he thinks they needed a cuddle.
